Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low-income neighborhood with limited resources and have varied sensory, emotional and learning difficulties. With so much stacked against them, they still come to school with the biggest smiles on their faces! They are so eager to come to the speech room and work incredibly hard to address their goals. My youngest students LOVE to be on the floor while in therapy! As they are not meant to sit at a desk all day, I want to accommodate their different styles of learning. They will be even happier to come to school, feel success at an early age, and most importantly... have fun while learning!
My Project
I work with students in kindergarten all through fifth grade and have to be creative and flexible in my lesson planning. Thankfully, Super Duper products are made to address a variety of needs and ages! These durable, laminated items are evidence based and will be used over and over again without fail.
My students need games and activities that focus on language, letter/sound recognition, and writing while also understanding how to appropriately interact with their peers.
I desperately need more resources to keep up with teaching literacy, grammar, and social skills, while addressing the curriculum and keeping my students engaged. They provide real world examples through photographs and the manipulatives make learning more realistic and individualized for a multi-sensory learner! A puppet theater will allow the students to work on their language through imaginative play! It will put the pressures of talking on the puppets and give shy children a chance to speak freely. With the ink refills, I can print resources to send home for parental involvement and for students to carry over newly learned skills.
In addition to the learning games, I wish to improve the space to make it more sensory friendly. My speech room lacks the appropriate furniture and equipment. Most of it is old, solid and not flexible for our energetic kids. The hammock swing, frame and bean bag will provide the gross/fine motor and vestibular stimulation necessary to prepare my students to sit quietly and listen when completing independent work in all areas of school and with many daily living skills (waiting, turn taking, self-soothing, transitioning between tasks, expression feelings etc.). I want to create a space that aids students in becoming mindful of their bodies, emotions and most importantly, their spirits. With your generous support, we can make the dream a reality.
