My students need swings that will provide vestibular sensory input to allow them the opportunity to participate appropriately in various activities throughout the school day.
At JB Elementary School there are two Special Education programs within the Kindergarten unit. Programs include the Integrated Kindergarten and the Kindergarten Sensory Communication Program. These programs service all Kindergarten children who have learning, physical, and/or sensory difficulties. All students have an Individualized Education Plan that reflect the need for support in areas such as Math, Literacy, Functional Skills, Social Skills, Sensory, Communication, Occupational Therapy, and/or Physical Therapy.
In order to successfully meet the needs of our students it is necessary that we have various tools that positively impact their unique learning styles.
My Project
Many of the students that we service have sensory needs that impact their ability to learn like that of a typical child their age. These needs require an intentional, strategic, and proactive approach. As teachers, it is important that we provide tools such as swings, fidgets, "squeeze machines", weighted blankets, and specialized seating options. These tools provide students with the sensory input that they need to regulate their body and be successful in the classroom.
With the use of such sensory tools, our students will be able to engage in social interactions, focus on their education, self-soothe, and sustain attention to task more effectively.
Increasing a child's ability to function comfortably and successfully in a classroom setting will lead to progress in all areas of their development.
