I work in two schools and have created a swim league from the two Jersey City schools. This school is in transition, with new students coming in and rising scores.
The students here involve themselves in after-school programs, academic and athletic, funded by student-led donations.
Swim team operates during after-school, two hours per week. They are charging ahead in scholarship.
I would describe the atmosphere as a school with a heart. They are very much a family. They run drives for coatless students, create food donation baskets at holiday time, and have run fundraisers for a student's family when the student was battling a terminal disease. When a teacher contracted cancer, they had pep rallies for her.
Our swim team, is a unique, community-led program. The students at our school are enthusiastic participants in our swim league, but do not have the finances available to be able to pay the extremely expensive weekly fees to the private age-group swim leagues in the city . They charge upwards of $400.00 per month for each enrolee. Our team is partially funded by the JCPS, who pay for the teacher to be present - that is all!
Our team is 3 years old.
We have won our first meet this year, and our students want some kind of recognition. A T Shirt would help.
