Many of my students come to me from low-income families. Single parents are raising most of our students. Ten percent of my students live with a grandparent or a foster parent, due to their parents being unfit. Almost 100% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches. Throughout the year, we are made aware of our homeless students. These students need extra care and attention.
I try to be an emotional support to as many of my students as I can.
I provide supplies to many of my students because they just don't have the money for school supplies. School supplies are a low priority when you are homeless and without other basic necessities. My students come to me without many of the skills they need for high school. Around 60% of my students are below grade level. This is a result of many of them attending different schools throughout their education.
I am in a transient district, which adds to the struggles of the students who move around a lot. In order to catch my students up to grade level, I have to help them work on fluency and skills from lower grades.
My Project
I am the swim coach in a very diverse building. We have 94% of our students on free and reduced lunch. We have a large population of English Language Learners. Swimming is not a typical sport for our students to participate in but I am trying to change that.
A good pair of swim goggles are essential for a swimmer to be able to see the wall during practice and meets.
Both our boy and girl swimmers struggle with keeping their hair out of their faces when they are swimming. These swim caps and goggles will help them be able to see in the water so they know when to turn.
The swim program is newer and we do not have any of these items, nor do our students have the funds to purchase all of this equipment on their own.
Swimming is a sport they can do their entire lives and it is an amazing low-impact way to stay in shape. Please help our swimmers have an amazing season and help close the economic gap between our students and the other teams in our district. Our league is very competitive and many of the schools we compete against have a lot more resources than we do.
