Our students are from all over the world and range from middle class to disadvantaged. Our school has over 400 students. Here, our students are extremely academically-minded, they work hard to have the best grades, and they want to go to Ivy league colleges. They are very serious students. Because we are such a small school, we have big goals but small finances. Our swim team is filled with serious competitors. They have tutoring every afternoon.
I work in two schools and have created a swim league from the two Jersey City schools.
My second school is in transition, with new students coming in and rising scores.
The students here involved themselves in after-school programs, academic and athletic, funded by student-led donations. Swim team operates during after-school, two hours per week. They are catching up in scholarship.
I would describe the atmosphere as a school with a heart. They are very much a family. They run drives for coatless students, create food donation baskets at holiday time, and have run fundraisers for a student's family when the student was battling cancer. When a teacher contracted cancer, they had pep rallies for her.
My Project
Our team needs to strengthen their kicking, so that they can win their individual races during a competition. These fins will provide the workout that they need.
All team members need to work on their individual body parts.
Swim fins work out the lower body, while hand paddles work on the upper body. Swim fins also correct the kick, because some students tend to flex their ankles, thus causing them to go backwards instead of forwards!
Bins are needed to store the fins, so that they can dry and be used multiple times by all team members. Swim fins will be used to assist in the workouts during practice.
