My students need to gain a hope that they can one day attend a four-year college. They need to experience what a college is like in order to get excited about it.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students all believe that they will graduate from high school, but very few of them are planning to go to college after graduation. They state that college will be "too hard" and "too expensive" so they have given up hope that they will ever go to college.
My school is a Title I school with 96% of students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Many of my students have specific learning disabilities in reading or math and often feel discouraged when they talk about their future.
My students love to experience hands-on activities and really want to go on a field trip. Unfortunately, lack of funding has prevented them from being able to take a field trip in over two years. Their families care about them, but it is hard for the to scrounge up money for things like field trips.
My Project
My students need to experience college. They need to know that college is something that is within their reach and believe that they can attend college.
Georgia Gwinnett College is only 9 miles away from our school. It is a new, innovative, accredited four-year university. The college was recently ranked as the fifth highest regional college in the south from a report by U.S. News and World Report. The college is committed to being affordable and accessible to all students, including those with disabilities.
My students will be able to see and understand that they can go to college.
They will learn what it takes to get into a college, what will be expected of them once they are in college, and that a college education is something that they can afford. They will be able to see what a classroom looks like, what it would be like to live in a dorm, and interact with current students at the school.
