Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are learning from home through online remote learning. Some live in houses with 6 other siblings, are sharing technology devices and internet, and have to help take care of their siblings while their parent(s) may be at work or working from home themselves. Several of them have lost family members to COVID-19 and other family members remain sick or are in recovery at this time. Many parents are not able to help their children with their schoolwork either because of the language barrier or due to the fact that they are busy working from home themselves. For the parents that have been laid off, let go, fired, or furloughed, their income has drastically decreased, in some cases to the point at which they are having trouble purchasing the basic groceries necessary to feed their families. Because of this, snacks are out of the question at this very difficult time.
My Project
As we all know, students love incentives. In class, my incentives range from extra credit opportunities, to homemade brownies, to candy and other various snacks. Now that students are working from home, I am unable to get these items to them as easily as I used to. I would purchase regular food for their families, but Amazon has SOLD OUT of much of it. Their parents barely have enough income to supply everyday necessities so they have been going to food pantries or local places of worship to get whatever they can get their hands on. Students are no longer able to receive the little things such as snacks which make a big difference in encouraging them to work harder in order to succeed. My students have been taught throughout the year to WORK HARD and NEVER GIVE UP! They deserve a reward for their accomplishments as well as an incentive to continue working hard for the remainder of the Distance Learning process.
