Mrs. Pagliara-Suggs from Gainesville FL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a SWEET class set of novels of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl to get us started on a DELICIOUS year of novel studies!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The school I work at is situated in an extremely high-poverty, urban community with very little community and home support. Although the students come to us from very difficult home situations, they are excited to learn and eager to grow. Each 4th grade classroom has 22-25 students with all kinds of personalities.
Even though they have very little support outside of school, the students come in ready to prove that they can learn.
The school itself is situated in the middle of three high poverty, low-income, Section 8 Housing developments. Our school is 95% African American, and 100% on Free Breakfast and Lunch. The school prides itself on doing everything it can to help these strong-willed, hard-working, resilient, and determined kids!
"Aw, man, why do we have to read so much!?" That's is something that teachers at my school hear all too often. The district's basal is boring and unrelatable to the the students at my school. The 4th grade team has started a Novel Study initiative to get the students excited about reading!
Students who love to read will be students who love to learn, and we want to get these kids excited to read!
Many 4th graders walk in on a 2nd grade reading level, feeling like failures, and ready to give up all-together. I believe that, by giving them novels that are more fun, more relatable, and more accessible, we will see an increase in both test scores and, more importantly, their love of reading.
