Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an Arizona high school teaching English to eager and energetic freshmen. This school has roots in our community that date back over 60 years; alumni walk the halls as staff now and still take great pride in our beautiful, collegiate campus.
My kids are rich with potential and personality and are enjoying the adventure of transitioning to high school.
Together, we are exploring what it means to learn and grow. We are developing skills that will carry them forward throughout their academic careers, focusing on reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Our classroom is bright, safe and differentiated to allow all students to be successful with no exceptions.
My Project
Everyone needs a little incentive sometimes. Over the last few years, I've found that a small piece of candy, a sticker or some kind of recognition can go a long way in keeping kids engaged in class. While we still practice praise and emphasize growth, it never hurts to earn a material reward, no matter how small! On any given day, I will give out a piece of candy to kids for many different things, trying to reward something new each day. It's not just my own students who benefit -- I will often give out candy to kids on campus who I see making good choices or following school policies.
With 6 classes of students (and all the others on campus), we go through 50-100 pieces of candy per day.
It would be a huge help to have a supply on hand that would help us get through part of the school year and supplement the candy + prizes I purchase myself.
