My Students

My art classroom is the most groovy, happening place to be, made up of students who have always let their imaginations and creativity soar. We're talking the best of the best, challenge seekers and dream makers—my students have learned to embrace their inner artist-self and to keep an open mind to a world outside of their own.

Traditionally, they come from a rather rural-low income farmland county in the heart of our rolling hills and beautiful mountain home, West Virginia.

With such a rich heritage for the arts, there could be no better place to begin their artistic path than here. With that said, it's a shame that their exposure to diversity, to culture, and the world, has been, for the sake of a gentler term, very limited.

And this, folks, is where the art we experience in my classroom gets interesting. They're taken away from their cozy, "comfort zone" and immersed into a time and place all entirely new—and they love it! When you begin to take a closer look at what they're doing, you'll see all the subtle transformations that have and are continually taking place, both in their lives and in their art.

My Project

I have loved putting together project after project which captivates the senses, enriches the mind and encourages growth across the curriculum. Whether it be through history, math, the sciences, reading and writing students in my art class are immersed in instruction that bridges gaps through the disciplines with art as the centerpiece.

I love this approach, as there's no better way to make learning come alive than through art.

It certainly resonates within my students and learning becomes more impactful and long-lasting.

It is here that I thought, "Huh, why not take the idea of learning about money and put a creative art spin to it?" I see a significant lapse in our students' understanding of how to truly manage their finances, their understanding of saving money and even how to write out a check. It's rather exciting to see the possibilities here in teaching these concepts while having a little fun using art to speak the message, and here's how we're planning on doing it—through creating a school-wide multi-media poster advertising campaign directly related to that beautifully wonderful and sometimes complicated "Sweet Moolah."

"Sweet Moolah" will be the title of the campaign. Students will use the tag board, bright card stock, scissors and Sharpies, pencils, erasers glue sticks, and my supply of paints and art supplies to create their unique advertising poster which teaches us, the viewer, about a specific theme in the financial world. They'll search magazines and newspapers to find the words and lettering they want—design and apply different techniques and applications to their art and before we know it, something beautifully original will be created and their message will be seen, heard, and felt! Please consider helping us reach our goal: this project has a lot of potential!
