Children living in poverty begin school, on average, 18 months behind in reading and math. It is my job, with the help of wonderful resources, to get them reading on grade level!
My students are amazing, resilient boys and girls!
They live in Section 8 apartments within walking distance to our school. Most of them live in volatile households, but when they get to our school they are safe and loved. They are eager to learn and work so hard! Seeing their success in the classroom is a true blessing!
My Project
Learning to read is a vital part of life. My students must be able to read in order to help themselves out of poverty. Most of my students are not on reading level, and we are working every minute of our day to get them up to speed!
My students will benefit during our reading lessons with these materials: read along books with CD's, and a reading center activity kit. They will use our listening center to hear the book on CD while they follow along in their book.
The books are stories with math lessons, which is a wonderful way to incorporate math and reading together in one lesson. The reading activity center will differentiate their learning by giving them new activities to expand their skills in reading.
We have a 90-minute reading block where we spend time in small groups working on a variety of activities to enhance our reading skills. These materials will be used daily during our reading block.
My students will have endless benefits from these materials.
Our reading centers will be enhanced, and my students' learning will increase! Keeping them focused and interested in learning is key. These materials will be such a wonderful addition to our classroom!
