Our students are wonderful and creative. They love to learn and they inspire us to provide them with the best opportunities possible. Many of our students come from all over the city just to attend our school. They represent the diversity of our city ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically. They also represent a wide range of academic abilities from special education to English language learners to gifted students and we are challenged with meeting all of their learning and emotional needs.
We are multi-cultural, low income, urban school.
My students are hard working and eager to learn, but many come to school depending on the meals they will receive. Some have not had much experience with formal education. Many are the first generation to see college as an option. All of their parents hope they will continue their education on to high school and college.
My Project
Our students are getting fed, but many other life essentials are lacking in their lives. In the winter, many of our students do not have jackets or sweaters. Lack of these "life essentials" is obvious and distracts from their ability to concentrate on their studies. Many of our families have to choose between food or a sweater for their child. Sometimes the child is forced to stay home to avoid the cold weather. By having a few of these warm sweatshirts available for our students, we can reduce the fear of cold weather and increase their attendance. This will boost their self confidence and allow them to focus on being the best they can be.
Our students may not have all their basic needs met, but they still work hard at school and do the best they can.
Just imagine what they can do if they are not worrying about being cold or wet! They will be able to concentrate on the important things in school. They are the future leaders!
