This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Daily half-hour Zoom classes in all forms of physical activity to keep students active is the new norm for our high school semester-long dance course. While our school is located in Central Harlem, my students are located in four boroughs across New York City, currently the center of the pandemic. Over the past 7 weeks, I have noticed that most students do not have fitness equipment in their homes, and I would love to equip them with basic fitness gear that would allow us to expand our range of what is accessible in terms of types of movement we can explore.
My Project
These yoga mats will be shipped directly to my students, who I anticipate will share them with family members and siblings to maximize use. All freshmen and sophomores at our high school are enrolled in either Dance I, Dance II, Gym I, or Gym II. For these courses, they sign into Zoom four times a week for half an hour each (from over 12 sessions offered each week) to work out, get sweaty, and stay active. Since we are located in Harlem, distance learning isn't going to be over anytime soon.
Please consider supporting future yogis and fitness enthusiasts with the gift of a long-lasting yoga mat that they can use now and in the future!
