Our school has 6 new, amazing, awesome, smart, hardworking Swahili-speaking refugee students from Tanzania and Zambia. They come to school every day with big smiles on their faces and are trying very hard to learn to read and write at the same time as they learn English- no easy feat for anyone! But the challenges of learning language, literacy and a new culture don't get them down. They love playing, laughing, singing and joking around. They bring so much light and love to Carpenter School!
My Project
My students are new to the country, new to English and new to reading! With magnetic letters, a white board and a stash of Swahili language books, they will have everything they need to dive into beginning literacy!
Since many of our new students are in 4th and 5th grade, their mainstream classrooms do not provide them with the pre-literacy support that they need.
As their ESL teacher, I am seeking to fill the gap. I also know that seeing the Swahili language in print will give them pride in their home language and culture. I would also like to send the books home so that they can practice reading at home with their very involved and supportive parents.
