My Students

I am a traveling teacher and I go to four different schools a year. The students I come into contact with are from a vast array of socioeconomic backgrounds. I have students that are very well off, while others are homeless and come to school in the same dirty clothes every day.

Regardless of where they come from, everyone loves music, which makes it the one thing that can truly bring us all together.

In music, students can express themselves through movement, body percussion, singing and playing along with instruments.

My Project

Playing xylphones allows you to develop independent coordination skills. Your left and right hands work together and at times they need to execute totally different movements. Your brain has to communicate with your hands and tell each one how to move independently. Learning to play separate hand movements at the same time stimulates different areas of your brain.

Being able to read sheet music and play along also improves your hand-eye coordination.

Research suggests playing an instrument at an early age can change the shape and power of the brain. I want my students to have access to these instruments and hopefully it will inspire them to take more rigorous lessons or at least to continue to enjoy music later in life.
