This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I try to create a tight-knit family for my students within our large, urban high school. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have many different interests.
In my room, we make sense of language and the world around us by reading each week and writing about it.
My students are smart and goofy kids with many talents to offer the world around them, but many of them don't even realize it yet. "Miss M's Den" is full of students with potential.
My Project
"Ugh, I hate reading!" As an English teacher, I hear it all the time. The way to success for any child is learning to find the joy in the work. To help my students learn to love reading, we do at least 15 minutes of Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) every week.
Students that consider themselves non-readers simply haven't met the book that changes their mind yet.
SSR allows them to settle down with a book of their choice. Comfortable seats like beanbags and saucer chairs become extra motivation to sit and focus longer. Books featuring characters that they can relate to become a gateway to true enjoyment of reading.
Reading and the ability to sustain quiet work longer impacts every class a student takes and the rest of their lives. Help me hook them on a book now so they can find success in their futures!
