Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED" flashes across the screen. The countdown begins: 120...119...118. Will you break the code in time?
My English Language Arts classroom uses the motivational techniques and terminology of a top-selling video game, all in the name of student engagement.
Today's children are growing up in a society that emphasizes instant gratification and ready-access to devices that think on their behalf.
As a result, they can struggle with finding the determination and putting in the hard work required to increase their skills and abilities in English Language Arts. What if we could co-opt the dynamics of the digital world to forward their education as well?
My Project
My students love video games! The immediate feedback and regular reward for achievement drive them to persevere and put forth their best effort, qualities that they need in order to be successful in and out of school. To capitalize on my students' love of all things video games, I have designed an alternate-reality game to be played out in the classroom in support of the curriculum.
We will use the requested sticker-crafting machine, ink cartridges and sticker cartridge refill to create stickers to simulate the feeling of seeing "high score" announcements pop up on their game consoles. Students keep track of their stickers, such as three perfect scores in a row, and leveling up, by placing them over squares on an achievement page.
The achievement page serves as a physical reminder of their academic success.
This helps tap into the intrinsic motivation that improves student engagement, participation, and success. Once students feel that they know what they are doing, their confidence helps them put in the hard work and determination that is necessary for success in the future.
