This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My sports teams are a group of middle school boys & girls that come from the heart of Miami Gardens. News stations have coined the term "Murder Gardens" because of the city's high crime, poverty, and murder rates. Despite being surrounded by such conditions my students excel academically as well as in sports.
These students defy all odds daily in the classroom as well as on the track and football field; they use these sports as the only outlet to forget about the daily stresses of life and to just be a kid.
My students have very little access to extracurricular activities due to lack of funding and resources. Once able to participate in sports, remarkable talent erupts.
My Project
All athletes need certain items to be successful in their craft. Some of these basic resources needed are vital to playing sports. Items such as water bottles to keep athletes hydrated and a tent to keep athletes from being in direct contact with the sun for hours are some things that are needed. Although they may seem simple to some, these are items that schools with little resources lack.
Through sports students gain confidence, leadership, values, and principles that is conducive to being a successful adult.
These items will help maintain a safe and healthy atmosphere for my athletes to acquire the skills necessary to compete in their craft.
