Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is not a typical high school. It is much smaller, in every sense. We are an alternative high school where there are only four teachers, each of whom teaches more than one subject. The students are referred here because they have fallen behind in credits in their regular schools. We currently have an enrollment of 50 students, all of whom are struggling in various subject areas, and need help every day. Our community is not wealthy; in fact, many families are struggling to survive. Not only in our school, but in our community, we need a change.
Our school has a philosophy of never looking back. We believe we should always improve. That is why our teachers and our principal only want us to have the best education. To have that great education requires having the supplies we need. Unfortunately, we do not always have the funds we need to pay for essential supplies. A major problem that is occurring right now all around the U.S. is obesity, and that is something that must be reduced. Last year only 2% of our students achieved a minimum level of physical fitness, and we are determined to improve on that.
The solution to the problem of low fitness levels is to purchase dumbbell weights for our P.E class. Since we do not have a gymnasium or playground, our fitness class is conducted in a classroom, and focuses primarily on calisthenics. Adding jump ropes and hand weights will make it easier to raise the fitness levels of our students and help them avoid gaining weight in the future. Helping students become fit will improve the quality of their lives, and that is a lasting, positive change.
