My students need a class set of the book Survivor Kid, A Practical Guide to Wilderness Survival, by Denise Long to help with research projects and a lamination machine to laminate their final projects.
My students are part of the largest school district in NH, Manchester. We proudly boast the highest ethnicity and language diversity in the state! My students belong to one of four middle schools in Manchester, NH and come from a large diversity of socioeconomic backgrounds.
While being part of such a diverse school district gives my students advantages, they also have to deal with many challenges as well.
Many times funds for simple classroom supplies are not available on a per-family basis. Some of my students are also refugees, immigrants, or transient due to family situations. While this gives them a world of personal experience and often makes them stronger than the average person, it also makes it difficult to focus, learn another language, and fill in pieces of curriculum that many be missing.
My Project
My students will be doing research on survival in the wilderness to go along with our literature selections dealing with overcoming adversities. While research on the internet is fine, we run into the problem of content that is too difficult to read, inaccurate content, or inaccurate sources. The book Survivor Kid is written specifically for children and is specific to our research task.
Having one copy of the book available for each of my students to have a valid, reputable, and easy-to-read research resource would be an invaluable tool.
My students would be able to research the interesting topic of survival, and they would be able to research at their own pace.
In addition, students will be compiling their research into comprehensive projects in the format of newspaper articles and brochures/booklets/posters. We will be entering our class survival newspaper with our articles into the school project fair along with our projects. To help protect our hard work, we would love to have a laminator be able to laminate our newspaper articles and projects.
