Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live primarily in neighborhoods where there are apartments and motels. Despite their situation, our students look forward to coming to school and be challenged. Our school is known for assisting students of multiple nationalities and backgrounds who speak different languages and are learning to embrace education as a key to future success. Every student regardless of their background, should be welcomed and know that school is a safe haven where they can learn and develop coping skills and a good working ethic. By greeting each student with a warm smile, lets students know that they are loved and need to be ready to learn.
I am a 1st-grade teacher at a Title I school in Las Vegas where 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and some take a weekend sack.
But despite some learning challenges and hardships, every student should begin their day by feeling loved and confident to learn and try their best.
My Project
We have students that at times have to leave their apartments with only the clothes they are wearing. Some are transient families facing financial hardships and struggles. It is important for our students to come to school without worrying that they will be singled out and have chronic absences because they don't have the necessities to come to school.
By providing weekend snacks we ensure our students are fed and are provided with treats on special occasions and especially for trying their best to learn.
With the first aid kits and toiletries, we can ensure that our students are practicing good hygiene habits and can have necessities that they don't normally have at home.
