One of the courses I teach is Ag Power. My Ag Power classes are predominantly boys. Our goal each year is to learn about small engines and residential electricity. When I started teaching this class I was a little worried about how the dynamic was going to be (10-15 high school boys per class with no young ladies to keep them in check, YIKES! I couldn't have been more wrong!!
The group of young men I get to work with in these classes are phenomenal.
They are hardworking, intelligent, and nothing if not efficient (they do not like things that waste their time, and I respect that!). They love anything that is hands-on and practical for them. I have a lot of young men in those classes that are interested in pursuing careers in the building trades; plumbers, carpenters, welders, electricians, etc. These young men enjoy learning what makes things work and how to fix them. I am proud that I get to teach young men like these and help provide the up and coming workforce.
My Project
The goal of this project is to provide 2 DEWALT Builder's Levels to my Ag Power classes. I recently attended CASE (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education) and have lots of new tools for my teacher toolbox. This curriculum has a heavy emphasis on STEM and inquiry-based learning.
I am excited to put my new knowledge to work for my students, but I need some tools to do that.
A very important tool that we will use throughout the year for various activities is a builder's level. We will use this tool to complete activities that revolve around the slope of land and land surveying.
These tools will help us to carry out inquiry-based activities in the classroom. We will look at concepts, such as slope, within a practical application and take it to a deeper level of understanding than they have ever had before. The students in my Ag Power classes are always curious about how and why things work and we are going to explore the how and the why much more than ever before. I am excited to get to work!
