The students in my alternative school have all experienced different types of trauma in the short time they’ve been on this earth. All students have been diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disorders, in addition to dealing with the death of a parent, incarcerated parent(s), moving around in foster care, drugs in the home, and/or basic needs left unmet. Each student has been placed in the alternative center due to lack of academic success in their general schools, a high amount of behavior referrals, and in some cases, a court order. My goal is to do my very best to help my students realize the past is in the past and doesn’t have to define their future.
My Project
My alternative education students complete a majority of their lessons on a computerized program. The program, called Apex, allows students to earn credits for the same courses as their peers in the general schools. This allows students to stay on track towards graduating high school, learn much of the same material as they would in their regular school and be prepared to join in the regular classroom once they graduate from the alternative program. Still, the students have a variety of learning styles. Many students are more successful at passing the online courses when they are able to print hard copies of lessons to review before completing assessments at the end of each unit. The ink we are requesting will allow students to print materials needed to be more successful at passing their lessons. Additionally, while students are with me in the alternative program, I like to teach them how to become organized, in preparation for returning to their general programs. The binders will enable me to show students how to create an organized system for keeping up with materials for each of their classes. The notebooks will allow students to take notes during each of their lessons.
