Our school is a Title I school in Lebanon, OR. Our students come from diverse backgrounds, but all have the heart to learn. On March 12, 2020 we said goodbye to our students for the remainder of the year without even knowing it. School was cancelled that night due to the impacts of COVID-19.
While it is unclear what school will look like for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, one thing is clear: There will be students, and those students will need to be taught.
We are ready to jump in and teach, however that will look.
Our students are great kids with amazing potential—when given the tools to succeed, they can meet and exceed goals with great enthusiasm. We need to find ways to meet them at their most basic needs. During these times a lot of focus is on the family, not just the student. There have been, and will continue to be many emails, phone calls, and text messages to keep in contact with our families. We will be there for their needs: tech support, counseling, a listening ear, all in addition to being a teacher.
My Project
Our project is requesting assistance to purchase a storage rack with 30 surf seats. We have a caseload of over 40 Special Education students that we support with 8 paraprofessionals on a daily basis. We are currently teaching Comprehensive Distance Learning for the majority of our students with a small percentage coming to the school for Small Group Instruction and hopes of re-opening in the coming months.
Surf desks are a super versatile, flexible seating option that allows students to have a writing surface while seated on the floor, bleacher, chair and more.
Flexible seating options allow students to have some movement while learning which in turn helps them focus.
It is still unclear how Special Education groups will happen when we return to school - will students be able to come to the Learning Resource Center or we will need to go to them? These surf desks are easy to sanitize between uses, take minimal space, and can be used numerous ways. We will use them in our small group setting within the Learning Resource Center as well as checking them out to teachers to use within the classroom.
