Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are enthusiastic, caring, and eager to learn. They always strive to do their best and be their best. Most qualify for free or reduced lunch and represent many different languages and cultures.
Each child brings a lot to our classroom but socially and academically.
The fast pace of our demanding curriculum, at times presents challenges to my students. They need the time to grow academically at the pace they are ready for. My goal for my "kids" is to guide each one to be a great mathematician and problem solver.
My Project
I work in a public school where our students are members of a diverse, highly populated urban area. Over half of our school's population are English Language Learners with varying levels of academic skill and knowledge. With the varying levels of skill, in my own classroom, the use of math stations is a must. These stations will allow for differentiation at the pace and level of the individual students. It will also allow me the time I need to be able to meet with guided math groups to provide my students with the support and enrichment they need to succeed.
In order for these stations to run smoothly, differentiated materials that are challenging, fun, and aligned with district and state goals are needed.
The games will enhance my game station by allowing students to play and learn at the same time. I will be able to tie them into the units I am teaching since they are split up just the way our curriculum is. The multiplication pens and practice cards will give my students the daily practice and drill they need of their basic facts that so many of them are missing and our math program assumes they know by fifth grade. Problem solving cards will give each student the chance to become even better math thinkers and reasoners. I will be able to give certain cards to certain groups to differentiate for the ones that need a challenge versus the ones that need repetition and one/two step
problems. The other materials/kits will allow for differentiation as well and an emphasis on test prep and meeting state standards. Lastly, these materials will allow my students to be independent and successful during the workshop time with their easy to follow instructions and accessibility.
