My students are engaging, funny, charismatic, curious, and they love to explore the world around them. First grade is a big step for most young learners and a giant leap from Kindergarten. They are learning to read, explore their math skills, investigate in science, and learn about the area around them in social studies. My neighborhood is a close-knit Chicago community that supports its students and its school.
My students are awesome and deserve the opportunity for the best learning environment possible.
I am a passionate educator and I work with my students on all sorts of academic, social, and life skills throughout the year. Just as each child is different, so too does each child learn differently. As their teacher and advocate, I am striving towards creating that type of learning environment in my classroom.
My Project
I have been working over the past several years to support my classroom and their sensory needs. I have a class of very energetic and enthusiastic first graders! In our classroom, my students learn through whole group, small group, and one-on-one instruction. My students have diverse language and learning needs, and I have enjoyed helping them grow and watching their development throughout this school year.
Through previous DonorsChoose projects, I have been thankful to provide my students with flexible seating options that have had powerful impacts on their learning while they work at their tables.
When we are all sitting together on the carpet, it can be difficult for 36 six and seven year olds to keep their hands to themselves, calm their bodies, and focus on our lesson.I would like to provide these materials for my students in other capacities of our classroom.
The Howdahug seat, and lap pads will provide a soothing sense of calm to my students, and will allow them to be focused learners in our classroom. I have seen some of these materials in action in other classrooms, and I would like to provide my students with the same opportunities. Knowing that we all learn in different ways, I would love to be able to provide these learning materials to help my students with sensory needs become more focused learners.
