Supporting Students' Success With Scholastic News!
My students need 65 subscriptions to Scholastic News magazine to bolster their reading skills in the ELA (English Language Arts) core curriculum in nonfiction text, and to broaden their knowledge base of news and current events.
My students are wonderful, caring, respectful and hard-working, but many come from challenging backgrounds with limited exposure to the world outside of Salem, Ohio. We are a Title I school, with approximately 60% of the students in our building (grades 5 and 6) receiving free or reduced lunches. Among our population, we also have a growing number of students who are English Language Learners, and that presents additional obstacles and opportunities for us.
My students love learning, and I strive to provide them with the additional tools, skills, and knowledge they need to help them be more successful in their lives.
I am fully aware that a quality education is the great equalizer, and I am committed to doing all I can to provide that for my students every day. I am so fortunate to work in a building where all staff feel the same way, and our students love and thrive in this atmosphere!
My Project
Through the inclusion of a weekly and engaging Scholastic News subscription for each of my students, I will significantly enhance their abilities to read and understand informational text. In addition, this high-interest and current resource will also provide practice and exposure to other skill-building activities in reading, such as listening, speaking, and writing. Scholastic News also has an online component, including graphics, videos, and quizzes that the students will be able to access and view on their Chromebooks here at school, thanks to the priority that our district has placed on providing Chromebooks for each student so that all have equal access to technology.
A Scholastic News subscription will broaden my students' knowledge base of news and current events occurring around the world, and it will excite and stimulate their interests about our amazing country and the world beyond!
Additionally, the content, depending upon the topic of each article, will build vocabulary and will support our core curriculum in science and social studies. The News will also help my students make meaningful connections between subject areas, and it will motivate my students' desire to learn more! It will also foster that vital home-school connection through communication and discussion with family about what we are learning here at school.
