Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my eyes, no sight is more beautiful than a class full of students engrossed in reading. Imagine a class project in which all students take the same book home every night and return the next day to discuss and expand upon the previous night's reading.
I teach reading to fabulous fourth graders at Ralph J. Bunche Elementary School in Compton, California. We are a Title I School in which all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our student body is half African-American and half Latino.
Last year, a generous donor funded a class set of the book Sideways Stories from Wayside School. Observing the students' excitement while reading this book was truly a wonderful experience. This year, I would like to expand that reading project. Since most of our fourth graders struggle with reading, I'm working hard to increase both their proficiency and their engagement.
The materials requested in this proposal, class sets of two books (Wayside School is Falling Down and Number the Stars), will enable me to ensure that my students are all reading appropriately leveled books at home each night. The students themselves eagerly requested the sequel to Sideways Stories, and Number the Stars accompanies a unit on Survival that we will complete later this year. Each day in class, we will work on enrichment activities based on the prior evening's reading.
I hope that all my students will achieve grade-level proficiency in reading this year, but more importantly, I hope that they will develop a love of reading. Your support of our star readers through this proposal will make a huge difference in our classroom.
Thank you for your care and generosity.
