Supporting Star Readers in Compton! (Part 5)

The cost of classroom sets of the books Tale of Despereaux and My Teacher is an Alien and this proposal is $623, including shipping and fulfillment.

In my eyes, no sight is more beautiful than a class full of students engrossed in reading. Imagine a class project in which all students take the same book home every night and return the next day to discuss and expand upon the previous night's reading. I teach reading to fabulous fourth graders at Ralph J. Bunche Elementary School in Compton, California. We are a Title I School in which all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our student body is half African-American and half Latino. This year, generous donors have revolutionized my classroom by funding class sets of literature that my students love. Rather than reading excerpts from the state-provided reading curriculum, my students are reading and analyzing children's classics like Maniac Magee and Number the Stars. Observing the students' excitement while reading these books has been a truly wonderful experience. This year, I would like to expand that reading project. Since most of our fourth graders struggle with reading, I'm working hard to increase both their proficiency and their engagement. The materials requested in this proposal, class sets of two books (My Teacher is an Alien and Tale of Despereaux), will enable me to ensure that my students have enriching material to read and discuss in class. Additionally, by providing a class set, you will enable the students to take the books home at night to continue their reading. The next day in class, we will do enrichment activities based on the prior evening's reading. I hope that all my students will achieve grade-level proficiency in reading this year, but more importantly, I hope that they will develop a love of reading. Your support of our star readers through this proposal will make a huge difference in our classroom. Thank you for your care and generosity.
