My students need a carpet to sit on with designated spots for each of them.
Every day we start off our day with morning meeting. Though students have assigned spots, they are not clearly marked, and thus students move around and distract others from learning.
We are a first grade self-contained special education classroom in the Bronx.
We are a class with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Our school uses the TC workshop model in which students sit together for a mini lesson on the floor as a class before working independently at their desks.
My students have difficulty sitting still and in their own spaces, so a clearly marked carpet would alleviate a lot of issues that occur when teaching goes on at the carpet, such as distraction and space issues. I believe my students will be able to focus on the teaching going on if they have their own spots with enough room on the carpet to comfortably sit.
My students will be able to focus better with a new carpet.
They will not be distracted by each other, and will be able to understand that they have their own spaces that no one can take away from them. This will, in turn, increase their focus and attention to the teaching that is happening.
