My students are second-graders in a small suburban school. My school serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Approximately one-third of the students are English Language Learners. A high percentage of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch, and many of them receive free backpack food from a special program for weekends.
My students are active learners who are eager to expand their knowledge and practice new skills.
They learn best when concepts are taught in multiple ways. This helps them better understand abstract ideas. They are deep thinkers and love coming to school and learning new things each day. My students are good at problem-solving, do not give up, and love a challenge.
My Project
The social skills books will provide the basis for learning more about specific social skills. After I read a book to the students, we will discuss it as a class. The books I selected, cover a variety of social skills including sportsmanship, friendship, coping skills, conflict resolution, and more.
These books will give my students real-life examples of social skills that can be applied to their own lives.
Often students are more comfortable discussing these topics after reading a related story. Social skills are vital to success both in school and later in employment. These books will provide me with an opportunity to introduce, reinforce, and model social skills that students can use both in school and at home.
