I am in a brand new section of fifth grade in a Title One school with a great deal of students who come from a low socioeconomic background. Some of these students live in apartments while others live out of hotels. My school provides free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch to a majority of our students. Right now, during this virtual learning environment, some of my students do not have the necessary supplies or support they need to thrive while learning at home in the online class environment. I have dedicated all of my time and efforts to fostering an engaging, supportive and enriching learning environment. Now that they have entered the building once again in a hybrid model, we can continue our learning together with all my students feeling that they were equally supported during this time.
My Project
During these uncertain times in education, teachers have a responsibility to reach far beyond academics and support students’ social and emotional needs as well. I am beginning a classroom collection of tools to assist students to self regulate their emotions, reflect on their choices and aim to focus on mindfulness and integrity in the classroom and beyond. Your donation would provide my students with some additional flexible seating options to regulate their sensory systems, growth mindset journals, a game of choices and consequences and social emotional discussion starters. These tools will support my students in becoming more reflective, empathetic and self confident individuals.
