Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our school community (grades 9-12) are wonderfully unique. They encompass a variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and ideas all of which help create a diverse learning environment.
Many of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and do not have access to the privileges that many teenagers take for granted.
Our students, like all students, deserve learning opportunities and access to information to help them become successful, contributing members of society. Our students are full of passion, energy, and excitement. They take pride in their successes, especially when overcoming obstacles.
My Project
My colleagues and I are starting a program called Supporting Senior Success that will focus on academic, attendance, and behavior concerns. Through the program, we will ask for volunteer teacher mentors to work closely with a maximum of three students. Teachers will monitor the students' progress, be in constant contact with the student and important adults in his/her life, and will help the student plan for success after high school.
The Dunkin' Donut gift cards will provide rewards for students working hard to get and/or stay on the path to success.
We want to see all of our seniors successfully reach graduation and be prepared for life after high school. The seniors, working closely with teacher mentors, will develop their plans for success and will be encouraged and reminded to make good choices for their future. Teacher mentors will use the gift cards to support their students' growth towards achieving their goals. Teachers will distribute the gift cards to appropriately reward success as well as encourage continued good decision making. Everyone loves acknowledgment of their hard work and it is our hope that the gift cards will do just that!
