I teach at an alternative school for students with severe behavior challenges. My students are in Grades 1 - 5 and thrive on positive behavior supports. Throughout the day my students have the opportunity to earn free choice time. They love to play board games, use electronics, draw, paint, build with Legos, etc. I provide a structured learning environment that embraces each individual students' interests and academic needs.
My students are learning to use coping skills and are rewarded for making positive choices.
At our school we believe that you feel good about yourself when you do positive actions and there is a positive way to do everything. Each child in my classroom receives social/emotional education. The goal is to reintegrate students with their peers at their regular school. I incorporate positive behavior supports through free choice time, behavior reward tickets and small prizes in the classroom. The school offers honors outings, school store, special lunches, popcorn Thursdays and other incentives for students based on behavior.
These students work incredibly hard to overcome their behavior challenges. Our program offers students' a chance to succeed.
My Project
My students earn free choice time twice a day for earning points by being safe, respectful and responsible with their actions. Students that have made positive choices can choose items from my game cabinet to play with. I'm working on adding new board games and building toys to the class collection. It's important to rotate the items available for the students to use to motivate them to continue making positive choices. The items I have chosen are board games and building toys. Every Friday we have a period for social games where students are practicing playing by the rules of a game and being a good winner/loser. I chose the games Checkers, Ker Plunk and Battleship to add to our game collection. The LEGO bricks will be utilized during the earned achievement time. Students that have made positive choices get to pick a toy to play with from the achievement cabinet. My students love to build and play with magnetic toys.

This program offers these students a chance to succeed by providing a structured learning environment with social/emotional learning.
