Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing since they come from places all around the globe. They have arrived in my classroom with a thirst and hunger for knowledge and to learn to speak English so that they can be successful in their new country, which they hope will offer them many new opportunities. Yet, they also come with many challenges and life experiences that are difficult to leave behind. While they bring a vast amount of life knowledge, they come with many varied levels of formal schooling, if any at all, in some cases. Yet, they amaze me every day as they take risks with language and learning, making new friends, and experiencing all that an urban middle school has to offer them. While they offer me daily challenges, they also bring me hope for the future of a world that honors diversity, resilience and peace.
My Project
Since many of my students have experienced trauma before arriving in my classroom, and many others are currently separated from close family members, they often are experiencing difficulty with adjusting to their new school, their new living arrangements, and their new lives in general. My goal in attending this professional development session is to acquire additional tools and skills to support my students with their social/emotional needs so that they can cope with the difficulties they are experiencing and continue to learn and grow in their academics to be successful at school.
Since our social workers, school counselors and psychologists are in short supply in our urban middle schools in my district, the classroom teacher must often take on these additional roles, and I would like to be better prepared and resourced to serve my students and meet their needs so that their they feel comfortable enough to share when they need support, so that they can thrive and not have to worry about the emotional baggage that may be weighing them down when they are with me.
I want to have the tools to help them having coping mechanisms, and I want to have the skills to better recognize the signs that they may be showing when they need more advanced help.
