Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Anyone who knows me at all knows that my students mean the absolute world to me! Ever since becoming a student teacher at this school two years ago, I fell in love with the incredible kids, and working with this population became my #1 goal. After my first year as a 5th grade teacher, my love for them is stronger than I honestly ever thought it could be. Who knew you could have so much love and adoration for kids that aren't actually yours??
My sweet, young students are over-comers of many obstacles, challenges, and labels that some of us could never imagine.
The population I serve has a high poverty rate. About 99% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch and about 95% are English language learners. Many of the students receive backpack weekend lunches, and they sometimes receive dental and optometrist services through our school nurse and school sponsors. While some see these as setbacks, it's incredible to see the joy and motivation that comes from these little ones as their desire to come to school and learn never seems to waver!
My Project
My kiddos need these materials to make learning comfortable and enjoyable, keep our classroom organized, and to help us "be the best students we can be, and learn as much as possible!" (our classroom motto!)
I gave flexible seating a try this past year, and it's amazing how much it motivates the students to do their absolute best!
The chairs and rugs will allow for my students to comfortably move around the room during their independent and group work time. They know that these materials are a privilege, and that in order to use them they have to be working hard! The dice, sharpeners, and table caddies will help us keep our classroom "a great place for everyone to live and learn" (The rest of our class motto!)
