Help me give my students an expansive science-based classroom library and file folder games to help them research topics and extend their learning. The set I have chosen covers all the topics we learn about in 5th grade science.
5th grade is a wonderful time for elementary students. My students come to me at the beginning of the year excited to learn about science and I try my best to keep that enthusiasm running throughout the year. It is at this time that many students begin to express real interest in the varied subjects that we cover in class.
As a Title 1 district, we see that our students are struggling with their reading skills and this affects all other content areas.
Creating content-based literacy centers can help students close the gap while offering topics they are truly interested in.
My Project
My school district has a goal to have all students reading on grade level by 2020. My science based literacy center will help students research topics and extend their learning while practicing their reading skills.
I believe the Learning Science Libraries will not only help my district achieve its literacy goals, but will also help my students achieve their own goals in science.
By creating centers that include nonfiction texts alongside hands-on activities, I believe I can make a greater impact in my student's learning experience. The hands-on activities create a background knowledge of the topic while the informational texts provide a broader explanation. This combination creates an ideal learning cycle for all students.
