Help me give my students great literature to support a literacy rich classroom and teach them about getting along as they navigate independent learning centers throughout the day.
We have a very diverse school in an urban location.
Our school has an extended learning day to give our lower income students a chance to engage in rich learning activities that they may not have at home.
Throughout the day we want to provide these students with multi-sensory learning experiences that do not leave them exhausted when they go home after an 8 hour day.
During the day, the children are often involved in play activities embedded with learning objectives. Many of these children go to after school, home to a single family member who has been working all day or to a grandparent that will sit them in front of a tv. They are not often given the chance to read, play games, interact with other children, or develop strong language skills outside of school.
On a typical day, my classroom might look and sound chaotic, but they are writing, reading, participating in STEM activities, performing math problems and working together in these play based centers. I strive to create and provide activities and games and a literacy rich environment.
My Project
The books that I have chosen will impact the student's social growth as they start to navigate relationships with each other. I would like to see the students solving problems, inspiring each other, and teaching each other throughout the day. Through interactive read alouds with great, and often funny, books my goal is to have the children use some of the strategies highlighted in the book when they are faced with peer issues. The children spend the majority of the day in centers without the guidance of adults and it is necessary that they are able to get along and solve problems on their own. I would like to build a classroom of conscientious learners and collaborators.
