I have 480 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade who are eager, energetic, and passionate about learning music. No two students are alike; they all hail from a diverse array of socioeconomic, religious, cultural, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds. A small number of my students have travelled internationally to seek asylum here as refugees. Also, all of the students here are becoming bilingual; this school is dual-immersion, so they spend half of the day in English and the other half in Spanish.
Although I do not speak Spanish, I would like to assist my colleagues in making connections to Hispanic music in my classroom.
I enjoy teaching several songs in Spanish and teaching students dances and percussion activities from several Spanish-speaking countries.
My Project
I would like to expose my students to a more diverse offering of music to listen to and perform. There are so many countries that speak Spanish and I would like for them to have an understanding of the different instruments and styles. Several of these books are about prolific Hispanic musicians. I would like for my students to be familiar with them and their stories. As my fifth grade students prepare for their all-Spanish concert at the end of the year, I would like for them to read about Celia Cruz and the other musicians that they will be honoring. These resources would give me a treasure trove of beginning-level Spanish songs and rhymes to teach and incorporate into performances throughout the year.
