Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello! I am a 1st year special education/dual language teacher who is very excited and ready to meet her 15 students of multiple diverse needs. Many of my students come from Spanish-speaking homes, where there is very limited English. I also have some students who are non-verbal. Most come from very low income homes, with very little provided to them. My students deserve more for their education and are simply not provided with the support and resources that they are in need of.
My students are kind, energetic, happy and eager to learn!
They are in a vunerable time as some will be attending school for the very first time. I want to set them up for success and build a foundation for them to be successful throughout their school journey. The class had been vacant for the majority of the previous school year, therefore the students did not have a home base classroom in the building with resources that could greatly benefit from.
I believe it is important for our students who have special needs to be able to have a welcoming space, a classroom, where they can learn to adjust to the school routine, rules and curriculum.
My Project
Behavior is a form of communication, knowing what triggers a child’s behavior makes it possible to find a strategy to help them. In a kindergarten classroom where there are other students with special needs, some students will need a specific way to help them cope with their individual needs. The answer may be as simple as providing sensory toys or a fine motor educational toy.
Liquid tile mats, tilting disc, and A-Z pegboard sets will help my students promote focus and concentration, increase attention and help decrease oral defensiveness for those with oral hypersensitivity.
Entering school for the first time can be scary and overwhelming for some, these items will help my students cope with their needs in a safe, educational and fun way.
