My students need these calculators for our classroom, not only for the advanced algorithms and math processes that we explore, but to advance their technology grasp.
The times have surely changed, but many of the resources within our classrooms have not. Our students are hungry for math exploration and we are in a constant search to satisfy their craving for education!
Our school is Title 1, which the majority of students living in poverty and impoverished circumstances.
Our school is staffed with amazing and talented teachers who demonstrate daily drive and instincts for education beyond measure. Our students are very high need - academically and emotionally. We strive to provide them with as many opportunities during the day as possible to give them tools to succeed later in life. The majority of our students do not have educational supplies or experiences outside their school day.
My Project
Students will use the calculators as an extension of their fluency skills. Due to the advanced nature of the calculators, the students will be able to not only utilize the resource for paper conservation reasons, but also to create various alternative methods to solve and check their work. Students will use these calculators multiple times daily - within group work and individually. These calculators also provide a function that the students will be using daily - it allows them to view a "flashcard" mode to be tested on their ability to calculate basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division questions using their mental math. The students then graph their data for later reflection. They enjoy this function and it makes it easy to get them to study their facts!
This project will make a major difference in our instruction.
Times have vastly changed over the years, but unfortunately our resources continue to be dated and limited within our classrooms. These advanced devices will provide immense opportunity for both guided and individual practice during our Math and Science instruction!
