Our school district serves approximately 671 students. The district is described as a seven square mile area that tends to be rural with an Appalachian culture in southwest Ohio. With a decline in revenue, our school district is the fourth poorest in Ohio's school systems.
Our school district may be small, but it is with purpose and intent that there will be a turn-around with a new focus of administration and staff.
The average median income is $24,930.00. This is a community in which the majority of the residents live below 200% of the federal poverty level. In addition, 96% of the students are economically disadvantaged and are eligible for free or reduced rate lunch.
My Project
I like to integrate other subject areas and provide my students with unique learning experiences. Funding of this project would allow my students to have the opportunity to have STEM/ STEAM stations within our art room.
The STEM/ STEAM stations would give my students new ways to problem solve, build, explore and create as well as provide opportunities for students to make connects between art, math and science.
One station I would like to include focuses on architecture. Materials requested include books about architecture, building materials such a Legos and blocks, colorful arches and magnetic shapes.
Another station would focus on science within the art room. These materials include books about artists who use science within their art. Doodle Bots and books about Jackson Pollock would be used to talk about force and element of chance while creating unique pieces. A green screen would allow us to use technology in our classroom in new and exciting ways.
Having these STEAM resources would allow my students new opportunities to develop an understanding that subject areas often work together and there are many career opportunity that involve the arts beyond painting.
