Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I aid students to face difficulties and to deal with their disabilities while teaching them that they can succeed in academics despite having disabilities. My students are still discovering how basic subjects like math and reading are not only useful, now and for their futures, but can also be fun.
My students are wonderful children who need extra time and support to realize they can be successful.
Many of my students doubt their abilities and with limited resources, I cannot support their needs. My students need to physically hold a book in their hand & read or use technology for learning and not mindless games. They face many difficulties in their life and a school room where they are lacking supplies is simply another obstacle keeping them from overcoming those difficulties which makes proper growth & learning an even more unreachable goal.
My Project
We need 15 copies of Shakespeare's Shorts, The Call of the Wild, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to improve literacy. We need three iPads for math, reading, and behavior. With these three book sets we would be able to have units centered around reading a specific book that every student has access to. Students would be able to follow along as I read and increasing the number of students who feel confident in reading out loud. They can study the book at home and realize that learning can be enjoyable.
The iPads would allow my students to access a math program that we are already using on a small number of computers when every computer is already in use. We could take turns using an iPad, as many students would be excited to learn how to use a new piece of technology. We could also load books onto the iPads (there are many free apps that will do this) and they could be used to reward behavior when students work exceptionally hard and show they are making good choices. Part of my class system focuses on making good choices and having an iPad as an incentivizing reward-object will encourage students to be the best person they can be.
Many of my students do not have access to books or technology in places other than school.
Our school does not have enough books per student and technology for students is limited to obsolete desktop computers. These book sets and iPads will give my students something that is truly theirs to work with & take responsibility for, opening up the possibilities for learning. Please help change these students' lives; they face many tremendous difficulties and learning should not be one.
