The students at my school are amazing. They are the type of kids who surround a new, tearful student on her first day of school, grab her hand, and offer to be her friend. This actually happened, and it was beautiful and humbling.
Like many pre-teens, my students appreciate the opportunity to collaborate while exploring and learning new things.
Therefore, I go to great lengths to create a classroom conducive to group work and hands-on learning. When planning lessons, I draw inspiration from a well-known quote, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn," Benjamin Franklin.
My Project
Many websites in support of flexible seating state that there are at least 10 benefits to flexible seating: choice, physical health, comfort, community, collaboration, communication, sensory input, and fun.
More specifically, balance balls provide fidgety students with an outlet for their energy.
You might remember the two or three kids who sharpened their pencils 5 or 6 times during one class period, or you may have actually been that kid! Often times, students ask to use the restroom or get a drink of water, just so they can move a bit. This choice of seating reduces the amount of time children spend wandering and increases their time spent learning.
You, or a child you know, might be the type of learner who prefers a hard chair and that's okay (I have those in my room)! But, you or a child you know might also prefer a softer surface that moves and rocks. Please help make balance ball seating an option for students in my classroom.
