I have a very diverse group of students who are homeless or come from poverty-stricken homes. Many days it is a struggle for them to get to school on time and have the supplies that are needed to learn. My priority is to make sure that their health, well-being, and learning needs are taken care of.
Although these students experience a lot of trauma, they love school and want to learn.
We just need the supplies and resources to help make it happen.
My Project
This school year, 91% of my first grade students started first grade reading well below their grade level peers. I have started many intensive interventions to quickly boost these reading skills and strategies. Unfortunately, I still lack enough low leveled reading books to meet the needs of my struggling students. I also need magnetic letters for students to use when applying word study strategies. These letters will give students another avenue for practicing their skills. The magnetic sight words will be used on my front whiteboards. These and the language centers will support students during our reading and writing lessons. The more often children see these words, apply these words, and write them, the more they will lock them into their memory.
Developing early literacy skills makes it easier for children to learn to read.
Children who enter school with these skills have an advantage that carries with them throughout their school years. However, more than 1 in 3 American children enter Kindergarten without the skills they need to learn to read (American Academy of Pediatrics). These lacking skills carry over to future grades and need to be quickly corrected because reading is an essential skill for success in school and later in life.
