I am an early childhood educator at P.S. 326, which is a Title I school located in Brooklyn, New York. 75% of our student population receive free school lunch and at least 25% are English Language Learners. Most of my students come from homes where parents are busy working two jobs and they often do not have the opportunity to read books or go on trips to the supermarket.
Although I work at a warm and nurturing early childhood center, due to our small size our school is often left bare and devoid of the necessary funds needed for us to provide basic academic and social experiences for our young, motivated and underprivileged students. As an educator I am committed to doing whatever I can to help expose my students to as many learning opportunities as possible, to enrich their vocabulary and assist them in becoming responsible citizens and well-rounded, productive members of society.
In my opinion, one of the most important things that I can do for a child is teach him/her to READ! Reading and being exposed to wonderful books is the way to shape a life-long learner. I am requesting a supply of well-recognized early childhood books in order to initiate my Reading Campaign entitled "Support our Superstars - one reader at a time."
I will use the materials that I receive to set up a special reading corner in my classroom with comfortable and inviting furniture for my students to sit on as we read books together. In addition, this reading corner will be a focal point of the classroom and a place where each child will receive the opportunity to visit for independent reading as well as shared reading experiences. I will also create a lending library for my students so that they and their families can enjoy exposure to popular, wonderful reading materials.
Also, I will use these books in my daily balanced literacy lessons as I prepare interesting and enriching guided reading, shared reading, and independent reading activities for my students.
Please help me in my quest to provide a wealth of wonderful, educational and inspiring books to my students who are hungry for learning and growth. Your dedication to education and to helping children is truly amazing!
