Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids were working on a composition about where they would live and what kind of work they would be doing in 10 years. Some of them said "The moon, Mars, Saturn and other planets!”
So, I called upon my teacher partner, a math/science teacher. She started a good discussion about life one another planet. Suddenly, one of our brightest and intrigued students (a little out of this world in my opinion), gave us a good reason to save money for building a house on Mars and the possibilities of a new place to live. His words were "In a few years, there won't be enough space to build houses here on Earth!" I do not want to sound paranoid, but maybe he is right.
NASA is a place that my students would not dream of going due to the cost of the trip. The price prevents our students to have the opportunity to go, unless it's funded by the school. I teach in an economically disadvantaged and at-risk school. Most of our funds must go to extra tutoring to help prepare students for the state exam (priority). The majority of our population of students are Hispanic and Afro-American. The school does not have funds to afford places like NASA as an incentive for an educational trip.
So, I am offering you the opportunity to help future Texan scientists and astronauts explore the adventures of space and the posibilities it may offer in their future. NASA will help my students increase their knowledge on science and also in having experiences that will help them become better writers.
If you help my kids learn more about space one of them will remember you in their graduation speech or who knows they may fly you to your new home in Mars! The sky is no longer a limit.
It is not difficult to reach the stars if people like you support our kids, our future.
