We are a prekindergarten classroom filled with lots of energy. I have 13 students, five who have special needs, so we are on our toes. My class is one of two in an elementary setting. We don't have many resources in our school. The students love being read to. My students come from a high poverty area. Reading at this age is crucial to a four year old. They learn to imagine and explore new and amazing things through pictures and read alouds. We encourage our students to read at home with their families. Our FRED (families read every day) books improve quality time spent with families as well as developing an enriching vocabulary. We provide as many books as we can to take home with a variety of languages and cultures. I would like to support the students more in giving them read alouds that enhance a love of reading. My students love to listen to stories. Having new technology for listening to stories will benefit the typical children and students with special needs in my classroom. Providing a vocabulary rich environment helps them become healthy readers and builds a love of reading. Students receive awards for reading books with their families.
My Project
These MP3 players will help my students become independent learners. It will increase their love of books and help them to become more familiar with technology. These students love to listen to stories and I don't always have the time to sit with them to read a story to them. I will be able to read a book and transfer the story to the MP3 player, so it's like me reading to them. The Kindle will be additional supports also for my students with special needs and will be able look at the books instead of just listening. This will definitely help them to be more independent and support their love of books. The is new technology to them and will enhance the prior knowledge of technology they may have at home and will support students who have little or no technology at all.
