I teach students at a small, alternative school. The school is located in a struggling inner-city community. Previous schools have not been a good fit for my students for various reasons, but they are reaching for success at my school.
My students are strong-willed and dedicated.
They have encountered many obstacles in their education process, but have come back to take control of their own destiny. Our goal as teachers is not only to educate them, but to meet them where other schools did not in the past.
Our teen moms work hard every day. They come to school and work for 7 hours. Then they go home and take care of their child. Sometimes they work all weekend to try to pay for essentials for their kid. With limited resources, they make tough decisions, like whether to buy food or diapers for their babies. Toys, books, and other educational materials are a luxury and our teen moms are often sad to not be able to provide those things for their children.
Providing essentials for a teenager's child can give her huge opportunities.
It might allow her to save money for school (for herself or for her child). It might ease her mind when she's wondering when she'll need to buy diapers again. It might help her with new books to read with her child before bed. With teen moms frequently taking on most of the responsibilities for their child, many opportunities are lost for them. This project hopes to give back some of that opportunity through meeting basic needs and educational fun for their children.
