I am an English as Second Language teacher who serves over eighty students from the first and second grades. I work with eleven groups of students weekly. I incorporate evidence based strategies that have been proved effective with English Language Learners such as physical movement and visuals.
We are a Title 1 urban school that serves close to 600 students.
95.4% of our students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. 94.8% of our students have been determined to be limited English proficient. We have a dedicated, united, and caring staff. Imagine you are nine years old. Your family moves to a country where you don't know the language. You might feel scared, confused, and alone. Despite this my students always come ready to learn and have a positive attitude. Overcoming a language barrier is a huge undertaking and I find their drive and attitude inspiring! My students learn best through hands on and visual experiences. Pictures/visuals are universal and transcend any language barrier. For this reason I am turning to the public and asking for their support to bring technologies such as iPads and the Apple tv to my classroom. Incorporating these technologies will have a huge impact on my students' achievement and will expedite their language acquisition.
My Project
ELL students learn best through hands on and visual experiences. Pictures/visuals are universal and transcend any language barrier. For this reason I am turning to the public and asking for their support to bring the Apple iPad mini to our classroom. We will use the iPad mini in the classroom to stream content from our iPads to a TV monitor. We will stream video, apps, pictures, and even student writing. We will use the iPad mini to record students speaking, reading, and writing.
Incorporating the iPad mini will have a huge impact on my students' achievement and will expedite their language acquisition because they will be motivated to use the device to write, read, and learn.
The iPad mini is a visual and tactile learning tool, these strategies have been proved effective with ELL students.
